Euro Cup Round 4. Hayling Island, UK

BREXIT DELAYED TO ENSURE THE 505 EURO CUP EVENT IN UK WILL GO AHEAD. 6-8 September 2019. A possible Brexit was postponed until October to ensure this 505 event will occur without issues. Will it be the last Euro Cup in Britain? In the nick of time 505s from all over Europe will descend on Hayling Island for the UK leg of the 505 Eurocup Series. So far this year the 505 Eurocup Series has visited Cannes, Riva del Garda and Kiel and has seen some exceptional competition; overall standings are close at the top and Hayling will be the series finale. Calling all 505 sailors anywhere this is your chance to take on and learn from some of the very best 505 sailors from all over Europe, as well as meet up with old friends or make some new ones. In the typical 5O5 knowledge sharing manner, racing coach and competitor Russ Clark will host daily debriefs over refreshments in the club with the top sailors participating in a Q&A forum about set-up and tactical thinking from the day’s racing. If racing is postponed or abandoned there will be shore based training organised too. Additionally, there will be a class dinner at the club on Saturday night open to all sailors and families and friends. So, if you haven’t already made plans to come to the UK’s pre-Brexit international 505 event this season what’s stopping you? If you are already coming then why not make an effort persuade your mates to come too? Event details are here https://www.int505.org/2019-euro-cup/euro-cup-round-4-hayling-island-uk/ to wet the appetite. The racing will be outside the harbour in Hayling Bay and at this time of year the water will be at its warmest, with a combination of sea breeze and gradient winds hopefully to give good sailing conditions, as happened last year.

GIRLPOWER‍♀️‍♀️

GILBERT & MCGRANE WIN TIGHT & CHALLENGING 5o5 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP SONDEBORG, Denmark – In a tough and tumultuous 10 races, Roger Gilbert & Ben Mcgrane (GBR) have won the 2019 5o5 European Championship. The regatta was sailed in a wide range of conditions from 5 knots to 25 knots. Much of the variation happening in the same race with a procession of rain squalls parading across the course. “If it weren’t for the remarkable versatility of the 5o5 we would not have been able to do some of those races” said winning helm Roger Gilbert. “Any other Class would have struggled to get more than 2 days racing.” The rain clouds brought with them increasing wind up to 25 knots and direction changes of often 90 degrees. However the 5o5 and most of the competitors revelled in the conditions which produced interesting, challenging and ultimately very close racing. Going into the last race any of five boats could have won the series. OVERALL RESULTS 1st Roger Gilbert & Ben McGrane (GBR) 2nd Ian Pinnell (GBR) & Carl Smit (USA) 3rd Howard Hamlin & Jeff Nelson (USA) 4th Wolfgang Hunger & Holger Jess (GER) 5th Stefan Bohm & Gerald Roos (GER) Full results can be found on the 5o5 event page at https://www.int505.org/blog/2019/08/08/2019-european-championships-results/ The regatta was very well organised by the Sonderborg Yacht Club. There were some spills, there were plenty of thrills and the video footage was “some for the best I have seen” said Class president and Australian competitor Michael Quirk. ” This is one regatta where pictures are better than 1000 words. The sometimes armageddon-like weather and the exitement of a 5o5 in full flight were captured in daily videos from the water & the sky by Hartas Productions & Christian Gossmann. The footage is well worth a view. Video and photos can be can be found on the International 5o5 Facebook page or the Event website. For more details on this event and the other International 505 Regattas visit the 505 International Class website. About the 505 The 505 is a doublehanded racing dinghy that incorporates a lightweight hull design with a powerful sail plan and trapeze. What makes the boat unique is its outstanding performance across conditions and the ability to impact boat speed through in-race adjustments. Quick and responsive in light conditions, and stable and easy to control in strong wind and high waves, the 505 can also plane in just 10 knots of wind. Almost every adjustment can be made while racing, which makes racing incredibly dynamic as it truly takes the best sailors to win. Since its introduction in 1957, the 505 is now the highest performance dinghy available today, and the boat of choice for some of the world’s best sailors as well as professional sailors when they are looking to race for fun.
